About Me
How I Got Here
I’m so glad you’ve arrived.
For as long as I can remember, I have been a dreamer, living “inside” my head. When my boys were born, I went on adventures with them at bedtime - whether reading a story or creating one in our minds.
My grandma was an amazing woman who grew up during the depression and as such, she didn’t travel much herself. But she knew it was my greatest desire…. Vada had 14 grandkids and we all received 100 dollars on our sixteenth birthday. She hoped I would use it to take a trip. As I planned to study music, I used the money to buy a new trumpet instead.
Growing up we couldn’t afford to go on lavish vacations, but my sister and I did travel with my parents - mostly road trips. Fast forward to when I had my own family and that turned out to be our favourite too.
I went to Hawaii with my husband’s family the Christmas after I lost my dad. When I look back now, it’s hard to believe how naïve I was; how inexperienced. I was also shy and lacking confidence. As a parent and a teacher, many years later I firmly believe that travel has instilled independence in my own children as well as so many students I have taught.
As I mentioned earlier, the “road trip” was our go to vacation. My husband and I also had the pleasure of traveling to China, England, Cuba, and Japan with students. The growth I witnessed in my own sons and so many of the students I taught, was extraordinary.
So here I am… a soon to be 57-year-old, retired after over 30 years of teaching middle school in Central Alberta, and living in Japan for three years.
I am starting this journey on my own with my husband joining me in a couple of months.
I hope you will join me as I reinvent myself during my retirement.
