As I sat listening to a woman from the Rocky Kamikawa Friendship Society speak at a staff meeting… trying to compel a teacher to take over the Student Exchange Program, I thought to myself… “Why Not?”
I mean my husband and I had successfully done trips to China with 160 students and London, England with 120 … surely, we could handle 12? As it is with every decision, there was lots of ruminating and back and forth. It was a life changing decision for our whole family. We fell in love with Japan, and Kamikawa, in particular.
We were able to take our two boys on the first of three exchange programs we were apart of. While in Kamikawa we met so many fabulous people, teachers, administrators, community members and families. On the second trip we stayed with a vice principal who had his family staying with him while he worked in Kamikawa - we fell in love with his little girls. That is when I said that one day we would come back to Japan and live.
We had help from long time members of RKFS in both Rocky and Kamikawa and we were able to realize the dream despite COVID.
Let the adventure begin!!
